Pourquoi prendre soin de son cuir chevelu ?

Why take care of your scalp?

The scalp: the protective insulator, guarantor of the beauty of our hair

Since the dawn of time, hair has been a symbol of power and seduction . A true cultural symbol for some or a beauty asset for others, its damage is unfortunately accompanied by an unjustified physical devaluation . Very often, when we talk about hair care, we immediately think of hair. However, taking care of your scalp remains essential since it has a huge role to play! A very widely vascularized area , this is where it all begins since the scalp is the base of our hair.

The role of the scalp

Flexible and resistant, the scalp covers approximately 600 to 700 cm² of our skull. Composed of several layers, it contains more than 2,500 receptors. A true protective tissue of the epidermis , a scalp is easily forgotten when it is in good health! Indeed, taking care of your scalp provides essential nutrients for hair vitality and growth. To ensure its role as a protective barrier , it is composed of three main elements:

  • The epidermis : made up of several layers of cells that are constantly renewed, called keratyconites. It is covered with a hydrolipidic film that helps ensure the skin balance of the scalp;
  • The dermis : thicker than the epidermis, it is also very vascularized in order to provide the nutrients necessary for the hair since it is at this level that the hair root is located;
  • The hypodermis : composed of fat, this is where the hair bulb takes root.

A healthy scalp gives beautiful hair, that's undeniable. That's why we must take care of it, even if it's not necessarily part of our beauty routine. However, many factors can unbalance this ecosystem and harm it.

Scalp pathologies

Different diseases can attack your scalp and thus slow down or stop the growth of your hair : scabs, irritations, flaking, patches or even hair loss are warning signs that your scalp is becoming sensitive. In this case, don't hesitate! Head to a dermatologist! In the meantime, we will list here the most common dermatoses that we may encounter (or not) during our life.

  • Films

A completely benign and common condition, dandruff affects one in two people in France. Unsightly, the cells renew themselves quickly and cannot be detached. They accumulate in visible clumps of dead cells that rise to the surface;

  • Seborrheic dermatitis

A benign disease of the scalp, it is caused by a very active yeast during an excess of sebum . Red patches, itching or yellowish scales are the sign of seborrheic dermatitis . It can spread to the face and evolve chronically, in flare-ups;

  • Psoriasis

A chronic and inflammatory disease that develops in flare-ups, scalp psoriasis manifests itself by itchy scales . The cause is the cells of the epidermis that renew themselves too quickly and accumulate in large quantities. The hair follicle is then destroyed and sparse areas appear;

  • Hyperseborrhea

Sebum lubricates and protects the hair . When there is excess sebum, it is called hyperseborrhea . This can cause discomfort because the hair is oily and heavy or it can end up as seborrheic dermatitis ;

  • Alopecia

It is defined by the loss of body hair or scalp hair : this is called baldness . Partial or total, temporary or permanent, there are two types of alopecia:

  1. Androgenetic alopecia which is “genetically” programmed and affects both men and women;
  2. Diffuse alopecia can occur as a result of significant stress, childbirth, an unbalanced diet, aggressive hair care, external factors, medication or illness.
