Comment entretenir ses cheveux pendant l’hiver ?

How to care for your hair during winter?

Why take care of your hair in winter?

Winter is already well and truly here. Some women dread this dreadful period. Dry hair quickly becomes dull and sometimes has split ends . Help! Other women have been able to more serenely adopt a perfect routine to take care of their hair during this winter period. And to find this perfect routine , it would already be interesting to know the composition of your hair .

Isn't it?

Determine your hair type for an appropriate hair routine.

There are several types of hair : oily hair , straight hair, afro hair, dry hair, or even combination hair. All these types of hair are almost as different and varied from one person to another. But what they have in common is their composition and structure . So what is our hair made of?

• Soft, silky and shiny hair

Let's head to the surface of the scalp. This is where we find our shield against external aggressions : the hydrolipidic film. Its purpose is to protect and regulate the hair's natural hydration . A bad routine or too frequent exposure to the sun, for example, can damage or cause your hair to fall out .

Macro-keratin-hair

The hydrolipidic film limits the drying of the skin and lubricates the hair . It gives a soft, silky and shiny appearance to the hair. All types of hair are thus made up of two parts: the root and the sheath which itself is broken down into 3 concentric layers: the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla .

• Protection

At the end of the hair is the cuticle, the first barrier composed of scales* cemented by ceramides that will form a waterproof barrier. Not so waterproof, because damaged by heat, by certain bad products, by UV rays, by pollution. And these scales can open and close. The cuticle thus constitutes the outermost layer of the hair . Its role is to protect the hair shaft against chemical and mechanical damage. It also ensures this protection of the cortex, which is the second concentric layer.

• Strength

The cortex is the heart of the hair . It is therefore the intermediary and the most robust part. It gives the hair its resistance. The rigidity of the cortex is due to the composition and arrangement of the filaments that compose it. In the cortex, keratin is made up of 2 types of fibers , some vertical, others horizontal. The chains, twisted like springs, follow the axis of the hair and give it its elasticity. They do not evolve in a vacuum… Horizontally, these protein chains are sealed to each other by sulfur molecules: disulfide bridges. These bridges give the chains their rigidity and coherence. The term "bridge" is not chosen at random: it reflects the solidity of this second type of protein, impossible to modify other than by an external chemical intervention that will have to destroy them temporarily if we want to change the shape of the hair. And finally, we have the medulla, the third layer, which has no specific physiological property.

What happens if the cuticle disappears due to winter cold ?

The cold represents a real form of aggression for the hair . The hair becomes dry more quickly, brittle and then dull. And this affects all types of hair that do not normally suffer from dryness. And who says disappearance of the cuticle, says cortex exposed to this cold which will damage the robustness of the hair. And therefore, leads to breakage.

So, without the protection of the cuticle, the cortex is alone to act as a barrier and will divide into very small units: the split ends!

The hair therefore has a good protective reserve, but when these split ends appear it is the warning signal.

This is when restorative oils such as restorative vegetable oils or even restorative essential oils for hair come into play.
